LONDON, Nov. 14 (UPI) — Harry Potter play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child took home the award for Best Play Sunday during the London Evening Standard Theater Awards.
According to the BBC, actress Noma Dumezweni who portrays Hermione in the production read out a message from Potter series creator J.K. Rowling applauding its director John Tiffany and writer Jack Thorne for “crafting the bare bones of a story into something very special.”
Accepting the award was Tiffany who noted,”It’s a show about the peril of isolation, about unity, about family and about love.”
Tiffany was also nominated for Best Director but lost to John Malkovich who won for his play Good Canary. Other notable winners from the ceremony include Ralph Fiennes who took home Best Actor for his work in The Master Builder and Richard III, and Glenn Close who earned Best Musical Performance for Sunset Boulevard.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which opened this summer in London, takes place 19 years after the last chapter in the series Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows. The stage production will pick up after Harry bid farewell to his eldest sons, James Sirius and Albus Severus at Platform Nine and Three-Quarters.
“It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children,” reads the synopsis. “While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.”
Recently, J.K. Rowling stated that she hoped The Cursed Child would eventually reach Broadway noting, “We do very much hope it will come to Broadway, but I have no dates to tell you yet. But, certainly, we hope so. We hope it’s going to come to Broadway.”
