Aug. 22 (UPI) — Authorities in Louisiana said they responded to the home of a driver who found a 3-foot alligator in the road and decided to bring the reptile home.
The Slidell Police Department said the resident was driving in Slidell on Friday afternoon when they spotted a 3-foot alligator in the road on Interstate 10.
The person loaded the reptile into their car and drove home, where they contacted police.
Slidell Animal Control and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries took the alligator safely back into the wild.
“Another ‘we can’t make this up’ story! Only in Louisiana!” the police department said.
Slidell police spokesman Detective Daniel Seuzeneau told the New Orleans Times-Picayune police “don’t recommend people pick up alligators and bring them home.”
He said it is illegal to capture and keep alligators without a permit in the state, but police aren’t planning to pursue any charges in the case.
“This case was obviously a little different because the guy called the police for them to take possession of the alligator due to the fact he did not want the creature to get hit,” Seuzeneau said.
