ATLANTA (AP) — Scarface, known for his gritty street wise narratives, received the “I Am Hip Hop” award at the 10th annual BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta.

Rapper Ludacris introduced Scarface, calling him one of “hip-hop’s best storytellers” on Friday night in front of a packed audience at the Boisfeuillet (BOH’-fihl-ay) Jones Atlanta Civic Center. The Houston-based Scarface said he learned from the best in rap and felt honored to receive the award.

Scarface initially gained fame in the late 1980s with the group Geto Boys through the song “Mind Playing Tricks on Me.” He is known for such songs as “Smile,” ”My Block” and “I Seen a Man Die.”

Sean “Diddy” Combs took the stage with Lil Kim and Jadakiss and performed his new single “Workin.”

The show airs Oct. 13.
