LOS ANGELES, Sept. 10 (UPI) — FX’s potential Sons of Anarchy spinoff may feature some familiar characters.

Series creator Kurt Sutter revealed as much in an interview with Deadline published Wednesday. Sons of Anarchy came to a close after seven seasons in December 2014, but Sutter said fans may see their favorites return yet.

“I would do a contemporary piece, not a prequel, and place it far enough away from Northern California that it wouldn’t step on the mythology that’s already been told,” he revealed. “It doesn’t mean that there couldn’t be some cool, ironic crossovers with familiar characters as the series progressed.”

Word of the spinoff broke last month, with the series rumored to revolve around the Mayans Motorcycle Club. Sutter confirmed his interest in the Mayans, saying, “It’d be interesting to see the influences of that culture and how it impacts the subculture we already understand.”

“I wouldn’t want to set it too close to the world we already know, and step on that,” he tempered. “It would be cannibalizing what we worked very hard to create and I wouldn’t do anything to undermine. We’re figuring out what that would look like.”

The project is in early development at FX, and Sutter said he’s in the process of meeting with writers to start work on a pilot. His latest series, The Bastard Executioner, will premiere Sept. 15 on FX, with Lee Jones as a 14th century English executioner.
