UAE, Canada sign MoU on margin of first Meeting of Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation


WAM MEXICO CITY, 16th April 2014 (WAM) — The UAE is seeking to strengthen its relations with active countries in the world with the aim of increasing humanitarian support and boosting international community efforts and ability to deliver all kinds of aid and relief to people affected by humanitarian disasters and improve living standards of individuals in developing countries and poor communities, Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi, Minister of Development and International Co-operation has said.




Sheikha Lubna made her remarks after she signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Christian Paradis, Canadian Minister of International Development, on the margin of the first High-level Meeting of Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation, which started in Mexico City yesterday.




The conclusion of the MoU comes within the framework of the fruitful, broad ties between the UAE and Canada which also feature bilateral cooperation and active participation in major international multilateral organisations, and out of mutual desire to advance their foreign aid policies and promote joint cooperation for supporting socio-economic development in developing countries.




Under the MoU, the two countries will have define a set of principles through which they adopt a more effective approach to address and tackle joint development challenges through discussion of policies and establishment of better ties between organisations.




Sheikh Lubna and the Canadian minister discussed agenda and objectives of the first High-level Meeting of Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation and ways of enhancing joint cooperation in matters of common concern.




Sheikha Lubna also met with Pekka Haavisto, Minister for International Development of Finland, where they exchanged views on mechanisms and avenues of joint cooperation in regards to delivery of foreign, humanitarian aid to the Syrian people.




The two ministers stressed the importance of setting standards for supporting persons with special needs in refugee camps and delivery and access to assistance. UAE experiment in building the Emirati-Jordanian Mrigb al-Fuhud camp for Syrian refugees in Jordan was also reviewed.
