FM meets ICRC president


Amman, Sept. 1 (Petra) — Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs Nasser Judeh met on Monday with President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer to discuss cooperation between Jordan and the ICRC as well as the importance of continuing such cooperation and enhance coordination between the two sides.




Judeh spoke about the burden being shouldered by Jordan as a result of hosting more than 600,000 Syrian refugees and its impact on various sectors including water, energy, education as well as on the host communities.




He voiced appreciation for the ICRC’s role, noting that Jordan is in need of more aid to enable it to continue playing its humanitarian role towards the refugees.




The minister also stressed the need to find a political solution that guarantees the security and unity of Syria, noting that a political solution is the only means to ensure an end to the humanitarian crisis that guarantees the return of the refugees to their countries.




Judeh and Maurer also discussed the humanitarian situation in Gaza as well as the importance of delivering aid to the coastal enclave.




The ICRC voiced appreciation for the humanitarian role played by Jordan as well as the committee’s readiness to continue to cooperate and coordinate with Jordan.
