Former Twitter product VP Kevin Weil, like millions of users, has switched from Twitter to Instagram.

Whoops.

We’ve been following Twitter’s nosedive pretty closely, from its tanking stock price to Sunday’s executive exodus. Apparently, the writing has been on the wall for some time. Re/code reports that “multiple sources” claim Weil had been in conversation with Instagram well before his departure.

After having started with Twitter as a data analyst, Weil quickly worked his way up to a VP position. It’s his much-lauded ability to communicate on both an engineering and marketing level that likely attracted Instagram. The social network’s explosive growth plays in stark contrast to Twitter’s steady decline.

Weil will replace Peter Deng, who recently left for Facebook’s Oculus virtual reality project. He will report directly to Kevin Systrom, Instagram’s CEO. Instagram itself is heading rapidly toward half a billion users, while its beleaguered competitor continues to hemorrhage people by the millions.
