CNN’s Tapper to Dem Sen Coons: Winning the Popular Vote ‘Doesn’t Really Matter,’ ‘That and $7.99 Will Get You a Latte’

On Thursday’s broadcast of CNN’s “The Lead,” anchor Jake Tapper told Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) that winning the popular vote “and $7.99 will get you a latte. It doesn’t really matter. We have an Electoral College.”

After Coons said that Trump wasn’t “overwhelmingly elected” because Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, Tapper stated, “So, I had a feeling you’d bring up the popular vote issue. And, you know, that and $7.99 will get you a latte. It doesn’t really matter. We have an Electoral College.”

After Coons conceded that this was true, Tapper continued, “And Donald Trump won 306 electoral votes, including in three very traditionally Democratic states, Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.”

Later in the interview, Coons argued that millions of people voted for Trump, not because they were racist or deplorable, but because they wanted change, and Democrats need to do a better job of listening to former Obama voters who voted for Trump.
