On Monday, February 3rd, Colorado lawmakers will debate state Senator George Rivera’s (R-Pueblo) bill to repeal the universal background check requirement passed in 2013.
State Senator Angela Giron (D-Pueblo) supported that requirement in May and has since been recalled by and replaced by Rivera, formerly a police officer.
According to the Coloradoan, Rivera explained that the push to repeal was necessary because “additional rules, additional legislation does not change evil people who have evil intent from wanting to do something and being able to accomplish it regardless. That’s been my experience in law enforcement.”
The Monday Senate committee debate “is expected to be one of the most heated of the session.” They anticipate hundreds of people will show up to speak in opposition to the background check requirement, and numerous Democrats may show up asking that the requirement remain.
To pass, the Republican bill has to overcome the Democrat majority in the committee and thereafter the Democrats’ one seat majority in the Senate itself.
