On August 7, a jury found white Detroit homeowner Theodore Wafer “guilty” of manslaughter and second-degree murder in the shooting death of Renisha McBride, a black 19-year-old, who was “extremely drunk.”
Wafer shot McBride on November 2, after McBride began pounding on the doors of his house at 4:30 a.m.
Mail Online reports that Wafer grabbed his shotgun amid the “unbelievable” pounding and “fired through a screen door as someone rushed from the side of the porch.”
According to Fox News, Wafer testified, “I didn’t know it was a teenager. In that split second, I didn’t know what’s coming next.”
The defense argued that his actions were in self-defense.
McBride was reportedly drunk and had crashed her car at 1 a.m. She then refused help from bystanders. “Prosecutors speculated [she] … may have been seeking help” when she pounded on Wafer’s doors three hours and thirty minutes later.
Michigan Live reported that McBride also had “marijuana in her system.”
According to The Guardian, cellphone pictures of McBride “posing with guns, marijuana, and cash” were not allowed to be shown to the jury.
Wafer will be sentenced on August 25.
