Pro-Life Chalk Messages on University Campus Vandalized with Swastikas

On Sunday evening after an event during which pro-life student groups across the nation drew chalk displays of their messages at their colleges, universities, and high schools, students at Eastern Michigan University found that vandals had covered their drawings with the Nazi swastika symbol and threw water on their chalk drawings.

Students for Life states that on National Pro-Life Chalk Day, the Eastern Michigan pro-life student group reportedly wrote phrases such as, “Life is precious, let’s protect it,” “Love them both,” and “Women regret abortion.”

“Eastern Michigan Students for life has two main goals on campus: inform the student body about abortion and help women in crisis pregnancies,” explained Rueben Ainley, vice president of Eastern Michigan University Students for Life.

Ainley said that their group tries to have conversations with their peers on campus to achieve both of those goals.

“We also have many events planned throughout the year to educate the student body about abortion,” Ainley continued. “The vandalism that took place on our sidewalk chalking display shows that some people who disagree with us do not want to have dialogue about abortion but instead show their point of view through vandalism and hatred.”

Chalking, says Students for Life, is a common activity for many pro-life student groups nationally, mainly because it’s fun, inexpensive, and an effective and creative way to reach out to college students who may be facing an unplanned pregnancy or who may just want to be more involved in pro-life activities.

“Pro-life students have every right to have their voice heard as anyone on any college campus,” said Students for Life president Kristan Hawkins. “Drawing swastikas next to positive messages of love and hope are unconscionable. Our pro-life movement serves to help and support those who are marginalized by society.”

“This vandalism shows the intolerance of some people on campus who have differing views than us,” added Ainley. “Eastern Michigan Students for Life, through our dedicated leadership team and members, want to change hearts and minds through loving means.”

Students for Life of America is the nation’s premier organization that helps to organize, educate, and equip more than 800 pro-life student groups on campuses across the country.
