A South Florida millionaire opened his Boca Raton mansion to dozens of foster children made homeless by the devastation of Hurricane Irma, NBC Miami reported.
Millionaire Marc Bell, who serves on the board of SOS Children’s Villages, received a call from a foster care organization pleading for help after the hurricane rendered its home temporarily uninhabitable.
“We got the call on noon Monday that the Sheriff threw out 70+ kids and their chaperones from their shelter after it lost power and had no place to go,” Bell wrote in a Facebook post describing what happened. “The head of SOS Florida called asking for help and Jennifer Bell and I said let the kids come to our place and we will sort it out from there.”
Bell consequently invited family and friends over to help look after the children, providing comfort, food, and accommodation.
“Over 72 hours we served over 800 meals, entertained amazing kids who had no home, arranged for medical care, and most importantly an abundance of love,” the millionaire wrote.
In addition to providing refuge in his home, Bell set up a GoFundMe campaign to help restore the foster community and to fund food and therapy for other foster children affected by the storm. By Thursday, the campaign had raised more than $50,000.
According to Reuters, the death toll in the wake of Hurricane Irma is now at 82, with 32 of those in Florida. Meanwhile, 1.5 million homes and businesses in Florida remain without power in the sweltering heat.
