North Carolina Democrat Focuses on Dementia Patients in Pursuit of Firearm Confiscation Bill

North Carolina State Rep. Marcia Morey (D-30) is focusing on dementia patients in hopes of gaining traction for her efforts to empower police to confiscate firearms from state residents.

Morey is pushing her confiscation bill in response to the February 14, 2018, Parkland school shooting, although that shooting had nothing to do with dementia patients or the elderly in general.

WBIR reports that Morey’s bill gives police “an expedited way to seize guns from people who may be prone to violence or suicide.” Such laws, referred to as Red Flag Laws, have been an easy sell for many in the wake of the Parkland shooting, even though they would have done nothing to prevent the Parkland attack.

Moreover, such laws have failed to prevent similar attacks in other states since the Parkland shooting.

For example, Maryland has a Red Flag Law which empowers police to confiscate firearms from those deemed violent and/or suicidal, yet the law did nothing to stop the June 28, 2018, Capital Gazette shooting in Annapolis. Instead, the shooter used a legally purchased shotgun to kill five innocents.

Charlotte, North Carolina’s Larry Hyatt–owner of Hyatt Coin and Gun–believes Morey’s attempt to push gun confiscation because of dementia is questionable at best. He said, “This is sort of like a drivers license, when do you take someone’s drivers license away. If there’s truly a real danger reason that’s one thing but just because someone’s older and can’t remember that’s not a good enough reason.”
