Cynthia Nixon’s defeat to incumbent New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in Thursday’s primary was a political blow to an emboldened far-left Hollywood resistance from the Democratic establishment.
The former Sex and the City Star, who styled herself as a “democratic socialist” of a similar ilk to Sen. Bernie Sanders, lost by over 30 percentage points to Cuomo, who secured endorsements from Democratic stalwarts including as Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden.
Following her defeat, Nixon pledged to keep fighting to push the Democratic Party to the left on issues such as healthcare, abolishing ICE, and a commitment to “racial and economic justice.”
“While the result tonight wasn’t what we had hoped for, I’m not discouraged. I’m inspired. I hope you are too. We have fundamentally changed the political landscape in this state,” she wrote on Twitter. “This isn’t just a symbolic victory. This campaign forced the Governor to make concrete commitments that will change the lives of people across this state.”

“Before we take our country back we have to take our party back,” she continued. “This is an incredible moment for progressives but it’s not just a moment. It’s a movement.”
However, the result of the primary contest was met with deep disappointment from Hollywood’s anti-Trump resistance, with figures such as Chelsea Handler, Susan Sarandon, Sarah Silverman, Michael Skolnik, Lena Dunham, Amy Schumer, and Debra Messing all having supported Nixon’s candidacy.

Despite Nixon’s defeat, this primary season has seen a spate of upsets from left-wing, Hollywood backed challengers ousting incumbent Democratic politicians. Two of the most prominent examples have been Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ousting Rep. Joe Crowley as the candidate for New York’s 14th congressional district, and Andrew Gillum winning party’s nomination in Florida’s upcoming gubernatorial race.
