With a recent tweet about Texas Democrat Wendy Davis, the Associated Press included an activist’s hashtag along with its tweet of the news.
Davis, a Texas Democrat State Senator, made a name for herself at the end of June by filibustering a new Texas abortion bill that brought accolades from pro-abortion activists in Texas and across the country. Her supporters used the Twitter hashtag #StandWithWendy to support her on social media.
A hashtag is a short code meant to help Twitter users search for tweets with a specific message. It can be used for humor, advertising, political activism, or news aggregation.
As it tweeted a recent story about Davis, the Associated Press also included the hashtag activists have been using to rally behind Senator Davis:
