On Tuesday, Texas Senator and conservative powerhouse Konni Burton (R-Colleyville) announced via Twitter that Texans for Fiscal Responsibility had named her “Taxpayer Champion.”
The group announced:
Today Senator Konni Burton (R-Colleyville) was named a Taxpayer Champion by Empower Texans/Texans for Fiscal Responsibility, publishers of the well respected, biannual Fiscal Responsibility Index.
Michael Quinn Sullivan, President of Empower Texans/Texans for Fiscal Responsibility commented on Senator Burton’s award stating, “When it came to defending liberty and advancing pro-taxpayer reforms in the 2015 legislative session, State Sen. Konni Burton stood out in the Texas Senate. Konni Burton proved herself to be a taxpayer champion working tirelessly for the best interest of the people of Texas.”
“I am thrilled to be named a Taxpayer Champion by TFR/Empower Texans”, stated Senator Burton. “As I said over and over on the campaign trail, I will go down to Austin to defend and be a voice for the taxpayers of District 10. I’m proud that TFR’s comprehensive fiscal index shows that I did just that. I look forward to continuing to work for the taxpayers in the 85th session as well, where I will once again put their interests first.”
Almost immediately after revealing the news, Burton followed up with multiple tweets, wanting to prove a point:
Anyone? It’s news, isn’t it? #txlege http://t.co/QoQvvBYEot
— Konni Burton (@KonniBurton) June 23, 2015
Oh wait. Maybe it doesn’t fit a media narrative, therefore isn’t “news”. #txlege http://t.co/QoQvvBYEot — Konni Burton (@KonniBurton) June 23, 2015
Defending liberty and economic freedoms of taxpayers. No news here. #mediafail#txlegehttp://t.co/QoQvvBYEot

After waiting a few minutes, Burton tweeted:
Hmmm. All the reporters seem to be busy this morning. With other newsworthy stories. Hope I’m not disturbing. #mybad http://t.co/QoQvvBYEot
— Konni Burton (@KonniBurton) June 23, 2015
Sarcasm was ever-present, showing Burton’s casual attitude:
Ya know, it DID happen a long time ago. Yesterday. #sillyme http://t.co/QoQvvBYEot

Next on her list was Texas Tribune CEO, @evanasmith:
Oh hi there @evanasmith. Thought you might find this newsworthy. http://t.co/QoQvvBYEot

Sen. Burton let the bait sit, awaiting for a response from Smith. The Texas Tribune CEO tweeted back, with plenty to say of his own:
Almost as useful in your district as making the @texasmonthly worst list. There’s always next time https://t.co/9HsZgT2EUR
— Evan Smith (@evanasmith) June 23, 2015
@evanasmith Oh look! Hi Mr Smith! What does @TexasMonthly worst list have to do w/anything? Dontya think defending taxpayers is kinda neat?

Once the point she intended to make was crystal clear, Burton signed off with a parting hashtag, #tooeasy:
I know y’all. I’m just messin’ with “the media”. I love pointing out hypocrisy. Ya know… “news” and… http://t.co/QoQvvBYEot #nomention
