HOUSTON, Texas—A Texas man pulled a gun from his car and stopped three men attempting an armed robbery. One of the alleged robbers is now in critical condition at a Houston area hospital.

Four people leaving from a Houston Heights area restaurant were accosted by three men who approached them in a car. At least two of the men displayed weapons and demanded the women give up their purses, KTRK ABC13 reported.

A man who was with the women pulled a gun from his vehicle and opened fire on the would-be robbers striking at least one of the men several times. That man was wounded critically and transported to the hospital.

Police told reporters another man may have been struck by the gunfire as well, but that man jumped in the getaway car and fled the scene.

At least one of the robbers may have been carrying a toy gun. Police reported finding a toy gun at the scene. They stated the toy possibly belonged to the suspect in the hospital.

It is not known if the other suspect who displayed a gun had a real firearm or a toy like his accomplice.

One of the victims told KHOU-CBS11 reporter Adam Bennett he heard one of the suspects say, “‘’Hey, give me your money.’ Well, I don’t carry cash, I just have a card. So I put up my card and my ID, and I was like, ‘Hey man this is all I have.’” He said the suspect slapped the items from his hand.

At that time, his brother pulled out his gun and shot the suspect twice in the chest, Bennett reported.

“As soon as he shot him, I ran over there and kicked him in his face twice because I don’t know if he was dead or not,” said the shooter. “Kicked him twice in his face, tried to clear his gun, but it turned out to be a fake. It wasn’t even real.”

Police told KHOU the toy gun was an Airsoft gun that did not have an orange tip.

The man then shot at the second suspect and emptied his 12-round magazine. The robbery victim said Houston police told them the man later showed up at a hospital and had been struck seven times.

Police told KHOU the robbery was a random incident and no other robberies had occurred in the area that nigh.

The police stated the report will be turned over to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the shooting was justified.

The two men claimed to be prior service military. “It wasn’t scary,” one of the men said. “We’re prior service military, so this was just like a regular reaction to us.”
