Del Rio Sector Border Patrol agents found two duffel bags filled with rifles, handguns, and currency on a ranch near the Texas border with Mexico. The discovery followed a tip from a concerned citizen reporting “suspected illegal immigrants carrying large duffel bags.”

Carrizo Springs Station agents responded to a tip from a concerned citizen on January 25 who reported seeing a group of illegal immigrants carrying large duffel bags on a ranch near the town of Carrizo Springs, Texas. When the agents arrived, they did not find the migrants but did find two backpacks that were filled with four pistols, 13 rifles and shotguns, an assortment of ammunition, and cash, according to Del Rio Sector Border Patrol officials.

The ranch is located about 45 minutes from the Texas border town of Eagle Pass. Across the Rio Grande River sits the Mexican town of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, an area controlled by the Zetas cartel. Officials could not confirm which direction the suspected smugglers were traveling, but weapons and currency are usually commodities that are smuggled into Mexico from the U.S.

Breitbart News reports extensively on the brutal actions of the Zetas cartel in this region. Those reports include a 2016 exposé by Breitbart News’ Border/Cartel Chronicles editor-in-chief Brandon Darby and journalist Ildefonso Ortiz on mass extermination massacres carried out by the cartel.

The article led to a sweeping investigation in the Mexican state of Coahuila and the eventual arrest of a mayor in connection to the mass kidnappings, murders, and incineration of hundreds of Zetas’ victims. Officials also swept up many members of the cartel as part of the investigation.

Officials in Coahuila also found several weapons stockpiles utilized by the Zetas cartel. Some of the recovered weapons included Soviet-era rocket-propelled grenades, body armor, and ammunition. The uncovering of these stockpiles continued with the seizure of a .50 caliber rifle, a rocket launcher, six AK47s, three AR-15s, and 1,500 rounds of ammunition in the Mexican community that borders with Eagle Pass.
