Manchin to Fellow Dems: Stop Holding Up Lynch Over 30-Year-Old Hyde Amendment

Monday on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) encouraged “the Democrat side” to “move forward,” and stop holding up a sex trafficking bill because of the Hyde amendment which is a “rider” that has been attached to various laws for the last 30 years that prohibits federal funds to pay for abortions.

Republicans are holding the Loretta Lynch confirmation vote until Senate Democrats stop the multiple filibusters they have mounted against a vote on the sex trafficking bill, demanding the longstanding Hyde amendment language be removed from the legislation.

Manchin said, “I encourage friends and colleagues on the Republican side, Let’s vote on this. She’s held up with the sex trafficking bill which is ridiculous. We need that piece of legislation.”

He went on to call out, “Our side of the aisle, on the Democrat side, a lot of people are held up because of the Hyde amendment. I’m for Hyde amendment. I am pro-life. I’m fine with it. It’s been there 30 years. I don’t know why we can’t move forward. It’s ridiculous to hold up Loretta Lynch confirmed twice by the Senate. She’s not new and something different we don’t know about. This is a good woman. She should be confirmed. Eric Holder should be able to move on with his life.”
