Box Office: 'Spider-Man' Rules, 'Heaven' Holds On

Box Office: 'Spider-Man' Rules, 'Heaven' Holds On

Having already cleaned up overseas, there was no question “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” would clean up here in North America on its debut weekend. As Deadline reports, though, the ridiculously expensive sequel ($225 million) that cost nearly as much to promote ($190 million), will have to gross more than its predecessor ($750 million) just to break even. ASM2 will land somewhere around $90 million before this weekend is over.

Those are great numbers, but compared to the Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire trilogy, Spidey seems to be running out of gas. In 2007, Spider-Man 3 opened to a whopping $151 million during the exact same weekend.

And that movie sucked.

The original “Spider-Man” opened to $115 million in 2002.

“Spider-Man 2,” however, was outperformed by “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”  In 2004, Raimi’s first sequel opened to just $88 million.

All three of Raimi’s films ended up grossing more than the first “Amazing Spider-Man,” and that was without the added boost of higher-priced 3D and Imax showings.

Holding well is the PG-13 comedy “The Other Woman,” which dropped only 39%. The revenge-against-men comedy will reap another $15 million this weekend bringing its total to $48 million.

In its third weekend, “Heaven Is for Real” is chugging right along with another $8 million, which will bring the $12 million film to a total box office of $65 million.
