Emmys Ignore Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert

Comedy Central’s The Daily Show failed to earn an Emmy nomination for the first time in 15 years after nominations for the best series in television were announced Thursday morning.

The current iteration of the Daily Show features new host Trevor Noah. Late-night veteran Jon Stewart helmed the show before Noah and snagged an Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series every single year since 2001, picking up ten wins in the process.

Comedy Central’s The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore similarly failed to earn any Emmy nominations this year.

In an interview with Reuters this week before the Emmy nominations were released, Noah said that his program is still “far” from where he wants it to ultimately end up.

“I don’t think I would ever have been ready, but that’s when you must do it, you will not be ready,” he said. “Sometimes you will wait your whole life to be ready and you’ll never do something.”

Meanwhile, Stephen Colbert was also snubbed by the Emmys this year after taking over for David Letterman on CBS’ The Late Show.

Colbert received 41 Emmy nominations and won seven times as host of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report, but this year’s Outstanding Variety Talk Show Series nominations went to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Late Late Show with James Corden, Real Time with Bill Maher, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and, in a surprise twist, Jerry Seinfeld’s Crackle digital series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

Colbert’s late-night show has struggled mightily in the ratings, sinking to an all-time weekly low in June. The former Comedy Central standout has not had the kind of viral video online success that Fallon and Corden have enjoyed with their programs.

Game of Thrones led all Emmy nominations with a total of 23 nods, including for Outstanding Drama Series. The People vs. O.J. Simpson finished second with 22 nominations.
