Election officials began sending about 1.4 million snail mail ballots to California’s registered voters on Monday, as the state gears up for its June 3 primary.
The by-mail voting will kick off statewide races for almost every conceivable California office, including Congress, state Senate, Assembly, governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, controller, and attorney general. According to westsidetoday.com, there are also two statewide measures on this year’s ballot: a veteran housing fund proposal, and a constitutional amendment measure related to state public records.
According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, the popularity of early voting by mail has spiked significantly, raising the pressure on campaigns to get the vote out extra early; in the state’s June 2012 primary, early voting represented 65% of all election balloting.
The primary will also feature Los Angeles County elections for sheriff, assessor, and two of five spots on the Board of Supervisors. According to the westside.com report, longtime Supervisors Gloria Molina and Zev Yaroslavsky’s terms will each expire this year.
California residents can register to vote online at http://registertovote.ca.gov/ or through individual county websites. The deadline for voter registration is May 19. Voters can request mail-in ballots by calling the secretary of state’s voter hotline at 1-(800)-345-VOTE or by calling their county office.
