Children Entertain Ohio Woman in Self-Isolation with Cello Concert Outside Home

Two young children and their mother offered to be good neighbors to an elderly woman who is self-isolating due to the coronavirus by putting on a cello concert outside her home.

It all started when their mother, Rebecca Tien, checked in on their elderly neighbor Helena Schlam. Schlam, 78, is self-isolating to try and avoid catching the coronavirus.

“Well, it feels scary and I’m trying to be reasonable and I’m staying at home,” Schlam told WCMH.

Tien called Schlam to check in on her to ask if she needed anything such as groceries. She did not.

Still, she asked if there was anything she could do to help and offered to have her kids, nine-year-old Taran and six-year-old Calliope, play their cellos to cheer her up.

“I was looking at Helena’s long porch and I figured she could sit on one side and we could sit on the other and still be together,” Tien said.

“Bravo! Bravo!,” cheered Schlam as the two aspiring musicians completed their more than 30-minute front porch performance.

“We had a great time too,” said Tien. “It helps us fill our day so it’s mutually beneficial, for sure.”

“It was so delightful. It was a little cold, but I just put on an extra coat,” Schlam said with a laugh. “The kids are really quite talented, and it was so much fun.”
