Report: Israeli Attack on Iran Not Imminent If Obama Sets 'Red Lines'

Reports indicate that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is willing to walk back his push for an imminent pre-emptive attack on Iran if President Obama is willing to set “red lines” by which Iran must abide. Iran would face immediate military retaliation if they crossed them.

Netanyahu and Obama will be meeting in New York after Yom Kippur (Sep. 26), and it is believed that meeting will provide Obama the opportunity announce the red lines.

On Friday, Israeli channel 10 reported that “if Obama gives Israel the promised ‘red lines’ and his personal commitments, Israel will not attack Iran.”

That raises the stakes on everything Obama says (or doesn’t say) about Israel and Iran, especially between now and the New York meeting with Netanyahu. And that’s because ultimately, the decision to forego an immediate attack on Iran will come down to whether Netanyahu can trust Obama to follow through.
