UN Steps Up Organizing Efforts for Global 'Palestinian Solidarity'

Only days before Palestinians reportedly celebrated the death of former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and launched rockets at civilians near his funeral, the United Nations (UN) announced its decision to step up efforts to increase global “solidarity” with the “Palestinian people.”

A UN General Assembly resolution adopted in November 2013 was released on January 14, 2014. It specifically calls for the UN Secretariat to support the Committee of the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People to generate international support for the rights of the Palestinian people, to organize international meetings for the Palestinian people, and to step up efforts in building and promoting a website named Question of Palestine. The website reveals a top image calling for support of 2014 as the “year of international solidarity with the Palestinian people.”

The UN resolution also calls for member states to give the widest publicity and support to a day of international “Palestinian solidarity.”
