Catalonia Government Moving Forward With Burqa Ban

The government of Spain’s Catalonia district is moving forward with plans to ban “burqas and other face covering attire” in public.

The Catalan government says this is necessary “for reasons of public safety.”

According to The Local, the ban “has nothing to do with religion” and will also include a ban on helmets and masks.

Catalan Interior Minister Ramon Espadaler said legislation regarding the ban will be taken up “in the regional parliament after the summer 2014 recess.” This comes after the European Union’s “ruling that France’s ban on full-face veils like the burqa and the niqab in public was legal.”

Spanish courts have had previously “thwarted” plans to pursue the ban.
