9/10/2001 – Bill Clinton: I Could Have Killed Bin Laden but Chose Not To

In an audio recording made on September 10, 2001 and released on July 30, 2014, former president Bill Clinton said he knew where Osama Bin Laden was and could have killed him while president but chose not to.

The recording was made in Melbourne, Australia, “with Clinton’s permission by former President of Australia’s Liberal Party Michael Kroger.”

According to the Daily Mail, Clinton said the following on the recording:

Osama bin Laden–he’s a very smart guy. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about him, and I nearly got him once.

I nearly got him. And I could have gotten, I could have killed him, but I would have to destroy a little town called Kandahar in Afghanistan and kill 300 innocent women and children. And then I would have been no better than him. And so I didn’t do it. 

The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, which bin Laden was behind, took place in the United States the day after Clinton was recorded saying these things. Nearly 3,000 Americans were killed in the attacks.

News.com.au reports that the 9/11 Commission report says “national security officials debated a missile strike on bin Laden in Kandahar in late 1998. Officials predicted 200 or 300 civilians could get killed, a local mosque could get damaged.”
