A one-year-old girl was reportedly raped to death in the Venezuelan state of Zulia this week in another shocking tale of violence to come out the collapsed socialist state.
El Nacional reports that last Thursday afternoon, the child began suffering from breathing difficulties and was taken to the local maternal hospital where she was pronounced dead.
An autopsy determined that the child died from a “hypovolemic shock due to an internal hemorrhage, a liver injury produced with a blunt object and closed abdominal trauma,” and also found that the child had been abused.
The girl’s mother, Lignarys Quevedo Parra, 27, and her stepfather, Oswaldo Sosa Torrealba, 35, who have three other children, remain in police custody.
The story is the latest horrific incident to come out of Venezuela, as the country’s humanitarian crisis leads to shocking social decay, which includes cases of cannibalism, child prostitution, and the butchering of zoo animals. A report from the American Spanish-language channel Telemundo last month found a growing numbers of young girls who have resorted to selling their bodies for sex in order to pay for food or school necessities.
In October, a Venezuelan man was arrested after killing a teenager and successfully selling his body parts as salted capybara meat at a local market. That same month, parents of multiple dead prisoners in the western state of Táchira said authorities failed to prevent a notorious cannibal, known as the “People Eater,” from killing and eating their children — and forcing other prisoners to eat human flesh or face the same fate.
There have also been numerous cases of people butchering stray dogs and zoo animals in an attempt to feed themselves and their families.
Conditions appear likely to worsen amid continued economic meltdown and skyrocketing rates of inflation. According to latest exchange rates, Venezuela’s monthly minimum wage of 175,000 bolivars is now worth to under $2, around one cent an hour.
