Deportee escapes ICE agents at NYC airport, flees in taxi

March 28 (UPI) — A prisoner in the process of being deported by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement escaped from custody Wednesday at New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, authorities said.

The detainee, who was being deported to Senegal on a prior weapons arrest, bolted from the agents Terminal 4 at Gate B23 Tuesday night, right before he was set to be put onto a plane.

ICE agents removed his handcuffs during security screening at JFK following a layover from Detroit.

Port Authority officials said surveillance video showed the man leaving the airport and fleeing in a taxicab.

Authorities described the man as a “violent deportee.”

“An individual being transported by federal immigration officials at JFK Airport [Tuesday] night eluded custody during transfer to a connecting flight,” The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said. “Federal authorities would know if he is still at large. He was not taken into custody in the airport by the Port Authority Police Department.”
