Los Angeles (AFP) – A fan was hospitalized for tests after being struck in the head by a foul ball off the bat of Cody Bellinger at Dodger Stadium, the Major League Baseball club said Sunday.

A spokesman for the Dodgers said the young woman, who was sitting just beyond the protective netting that extends to the end of the visiting dugout, was taken to hospital “for precautionary reasons.”

In the immediate aftermath of the incident she stayed in her seat with an icepack on her forehead, and Bellinger went over to check on her between innings.

The issue of protective netting, and whether Major League Baseball should require clubs to extend it to the foul poles, has been in the spotlight again this season after a young fan struck by a foul ball in Houston was hospitalized in May.

Last season, a 79-year-old woman died after being hit in the head by a foul ball at Dodger Stadium.

Linda Goldbloom was struck on August 25 and died four days later, with the Los Angeles County coroner listing her causes of death as acute intracranial hemorrhage and blunt force trauma.
