Feb. 10 (UPI) — Lionsgate released a new behind the scenes feature for Michael on Tuesday. The video shows Jaafar Jackson rehearsing and performing as Michael Jackson in the biopic.
Jaafar is the late Michael’s nephew, the son of Jermaine Jackson. In the video, he explains his decision to play his uncle.
“I never dreamed to be an actor or even thought of playing him but I knew it was a calling,” Jaafar says. “Embodying Michael, I really had to earn the role and prove to the filmmakers I was capable of becoming Michael. Essentially, it was starting at the roots and finding the authenticity.”
Footage shows Jaafar performing “Billie Jean” on stage in a black suit, with smoke flowing around him. He rehearses “Thriller” in the red leather jacket, and there is a shot of him in zombie makeup at the end.
Director Antoine Fuqua and producer Graham King also speak in the video. Jaafar said the film honors his uncle.
“I felt that love for Michael every day on set from the crew and the cast,” Jaafar said. “Everybody had that love and wanted to put all their heart and soul into it.”
Michael opens April 24.
