Judge remands Russian gulag historian in custody: lawyer

Moscow (AFP) – A Russian judge on Thursday ordered that gulag historian Yury Dmitriyev be remanded in custody for two months over sexual assault allegations, his lawyer told AFP.

“Yury Dmitriyev was ordered to be held for two months,” lawyer Viktor Anufryiev told AFP by telephone from the court in Petrozavodsk, in northwest Russia.

Dmitriyev was acquitted of child porn charges in a separate case less than three months ago.

Activists said that case was an attempt to gag him for his work researching mass graves of people killed under Soviet rule.
