Dec. 29 (UPI) — Brock Purdy threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more to steer an epic victory over the Seattle Seahawks, keeping the San Francisco 49ers quest alive for the NFC’s top seed.
The 49ers quarterback totaled 303 passing yards, including a 38-yard go-ahead touchdown with 2:15 remaining in the 42-38 triumph Sunday in Santa Clara, Calif.
“Brock’s been playing his [expletive] off, made some huge plays in this game, kept some drives alive with his legs, made some off-schedule plays, and was an assassin out there throughout the whole day,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters.
With Sunday’s victory, the 49ers extended a six-game winning streak to improve to 12-4. They sit in second place in the NFC West, behind the Seattle Seahawks, their Week 18 opponent. The winner of that season finale will secure the division title, the NFC’s top seed and a first-round bye in the playoffs.

“It’s been a crazy year,” Purdy said. “It’s been a fun year, but obviously we got one more game, for the regular season to lock in and we got to go do our job.”
The 49ers out-gained the Bears 496-440 in total yards and held advantages of seven minutes in time of possession and 32-26 in first downs. Running back Christian McCaffrey totaled 181 yards from scrimmage and a score. Kyle Juszczyk and Jake Tonges joined Jennings with touchdown catches in the victory.
Purdy’s night got off to an awful start, with Bears linebacker T.J. Edwards intercepting his deflected first pass and scoring on a 34-yard return. The 49ers used a 9-play, 65-yard drive to tie the score on the next possession. Purdy connected with Tonges on a 1-yard touchdown toss to end that drive. He scrambled for a 10-yard touchdown six minutes later for the 49ers’ first lead.
The 49ers and Bears continued to exchange blows throughout the first half. Purdy ran for his second touchdown with 3:23 remaining in the second quarter to help the 49ers take a 28-21 lead at the break.

Bears running back D’Andre Swift helped tie the score with a 1-yard touchdown run about five minutes into the second half. Purdy answered with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Juszczyk five minutes later.
Swift scored on a 22-yard run at the start of the fourth quarter to tie the score at 35-35. Kicker Cairo Santos gave the lead back to the Bears with a 29-yard field goal with 5:22 remaining.
Purdy hit Jennings for the go-ahead points on the next possession. The 49ers defense proceeded to smother the Bears offense on the final play of the night, forcing quarterback Caleb Williams’ last pass attempt in the red zone to fall incomplete and securing the victory.
Williams completed 25 of 42 passes for 330 yards and two scores in the loss. Swift registered 79 yards from scrimmage on nine carries, including his two touchdown runs. Bears rookie wide receiver Luther Burden III caught eight passes for a game-high 138 yards and a score. Fellow rookie Colston Loveland caught six passes for 94 yards and a score.
Ricky Pearsall led the 49ers with 85 yards on five catches.
The 49ers will host the Seattle Seahawks (13-3) for the NFC West crown and NFC’s No. 1 seed at 8 p.m. EST Saturday in Santa Clara. The Bears (11-5) will host the Detroit Lions (8-8) at 4:25 p.m. Sunday in Chicago.
