Sept. 8 (UPI) — IMAX, Disney and Lucasfilm announced Tuesday that Star Wars will be re-released next year for its 50th anniversary. It will be the first time the film is presented in IMAX.
The 1977 film was re-released in 1997 for its 20th anniversary in a Special Edition with new digital effects and changes made by creator George Lucas. The film and its two sequels were box office hits again.
IMAX confirmed IMAX 70mm prints, the format touted by Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer and The Odyssey, as well as Ryan Coogler for Sinners.
The new Star Wars film will also be released in IMAX 70mm. Star Wars Starfighter stars Ryan Gosling, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre and more. It opens May 28.
