June 17 (UPI) — Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan says it is he — not Cristiano Ronaldo — who holds the record for scoring in the most consecutive major tournaments.

Ronaldo tallied a hat trick in Portugal’s 3-3 draw with Spain on Friday in a Group B clash. The performance meant that the Real Madrid and Portugal striker has now scored in eight consecutive major tournaments. Ronaldo was hailed as the first player to ever accomplish the achievement.

But that isn’t true.

The record claim excluded the African Cup of Nations. Gyan has scored in nine consecutive tournaments.

“People disregard my achievements in the World Cup history but I want the whole world to know that I have not been given the fair shake but records will remain forever,” Gyan tweeted.

Gyan’s achievement includes scoring at the 2006 World Cup, getting the opening goal against Guinea in Afcon 2008, three goals at Afcon 2010, three goals at the 2010 World Cup, a free kick score at Afcon 2012, another score at 2013 Afcon, two goals at the 2014 World Cup, a score against Algeria at 2015 Afcon and a goal against Mali at 2017 Afcon.

Ronaldo and Portugal take the field again in Group B with a match against Morocco at 8 a.m. Wednesday at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.
