Maryland Sells 364 Firearms to People Prohibited From Owning Them

In 2013 a total of 364 firearms were sold to persons prohibited from buying them in Maryland. 

These incidents were due to “the massive backlog in conducting gun background checks” that resulted from Maryland’s draconian new gun laws.

According to Fox News, undercover state troopers “recovered” 360 of the 364 firearms sold to persons “who were not eligible to buy them.”

Still, state police spokesman Greg Shipley said, “the danger has not passed.”

Information gathered through a Baltimore Sun Freedom of Information Act Request shows that “people with histories of mental illness or violent misdemeanor convictions, as well as felons and fugitives, were able to get and keep guns for three months or more before police reviewed the sales.”

People buying guns in Maryland must undergo a background back but dealers can release the gun to them without background check results if getting those results takes longer than seven days–“and [if] the dealer has no reason to believe the person purchasing the weapon is ineligible.”

In that scenario, Maryland dealers “released 51,812 firearms during last year before a background check was completed.”
