Home Invader Shot and Killed After Pregnant Woman Takes Away Gun

On December 29, an Indianapolis home invader was shot and killed after a pregnant woman took away his gun.

According to ABC 6, the home invasion took place around 10 p.m. “on the 3100 block of East 10th Street.” The suspect forced his way into an apartment occupied by a man and his pregnant fiance. One of the two residents was armed at the time, but the suspect disarmed them. A wrestling match ensued in which the pregnant woman helped take the gun back.

Once the gun was retrieved, the suspect, Dequan Cummings, was shot and “pronounced dead at the scene.”

Alicia Oskay, a resident in the apartments where the home invasion took place, said the news of the crime did not surprise her. “Unfortunately, I can understand people in this neighborhood protecting themselves, maybe even keeping firearms on hand,” she stated.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) spokesman Christopher Wilburn responded to the shooting by stressing IMPD’s support of “legal gun ownership.” He described such ownership as one of “the basic tenets of our [C]onstitution.”
