Retired Maj. Gen. Bob Scales said Iranians do not believe this deal is about nuclear weapons–they will get the bomb–but rather it is about sanctions.

“The only issue right now is can the administration hold off demonstration by Iran that they have a nuclear weapon and can the Iranians get the sanctions lifted,” Scales said on Fox News.

Scales served in the U.S. Army for more than 30 years.

He continued, “If anybody in their right mind thinks that Iran is not going to develop a nuclear weapon after 20 years of development, tens of billions of dollars, seventeen different facilities to produce a bomb – no – the only question is not whether or not they will get the bomb but when will they be able to do it.”

The Associated Press reported that the U.S., Iran, and five other world powers plan to issue a statement Tuesday saying the talks will continue and reach a final agreement by the end of June.

The original deadline for the international negotiation was Tuesday at midnight, 6 p.m. eastern time.

According to Fox News, there are still obstacles remaining on uranium enrichment, where to store the uranium stockpiles, limiting nuclear research and development, as when as the timing and scope of lifting Iranian sanctions.
