Former Florida governor Jeb Bush registered as a Hispanic on a 2009 voter-registration application, the New York Times reports.

A copy of the registration form from Miami-Dade County shows that Bush marked “Hispanic” on the form stamped with the date March 06, 2009.

Bush’s wife, Columba Bush, is Hispanic, born in Mexico and he frequently celebrates the Hispanic culture.

According to the Times, a Bush spokeswoman could offer no explanation for the way that Bush filled out his form.

Efforts by Breitbart News to contact the Bush team were not successful, as the operation has gone silent.

With no explanation for his actions, Bush faces the first big test of his “potential” candidacy as he continues to travel the country to explore a run for president.

Ethnic identity “confusion” can be crippling to a political campaign, especially if it can be demonstrated that it was done for political or societal gain.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren continues to suffer ridicule after routinely identifying herself as a Native American at Harvard.

Bush can either claim that he made a boneheaded mistake, or try to explain his decision to register as a Hispanic in the context of his relationship with his wife and family.

Bush is scheduled to speak to conservative voters on Friday at the National Rifle Association convention in Nashville.
