Trump on Virginia Shooting: ‘This Isn’t a Gun Problem’

Thursday on CNN’s “New Day,” Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump addressed Wednesday’s shooting in Virginia that result in the tragic deaths of a TV news reporter and a cameraman and a severe injury of another.

Host Chris Cuomo asked Trump if the incident was a signal more needed to be done with guns, to which Trump declared it to be a mental health problem and not a gun problem and said more needed to be done in terms of mental health issues in America.

“This was a very sick man and it’s just too bad that we can’t figure these things out beforehand. I mean, everybody sees the signals but nobody thinks a thing like this could happen,” Trump said. “They see people and they think they’re disturbed, but what are you going to do, put them in jail for the rest of their life? You know, put him in jail for the rest of his life ‘cause he looks a little bit off, and he turned out to be very off.”

Trump reiterated what he thought to be the root cause of Wednesday’s incident and stated that he was a proponent of the Second Amendment.

“I don’t think I would, because this is really a sick person. This isn’t a gun problem. This is a mental problem,” Trump said. “It’s a very complex situation. I’m a very strong Second Amendment person.”
