The decision by a federal judge to jail Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis shows that Christianity is being criminalized in America, says GOP presidential candidate and Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.
Rowan County Clerk Davis was held in contempt of court, then taken into federal custody Thursday after she refused earlier in the week to issue marriage licenses to single-sex couples, following the Supreme Court’s 5:4 decision in June to redefine long-standing state marriage-laws for the benefit of gays and lesbians.
“Having Kim Davis in federal custody removes all doubt of the criminalization of Christianity in our country,” Huckabee said in a press release Thursday afternoon. “We must defend religious liberty and never surrender to judicial tyranny.”
“I am proud of Kim for standing strong for her beliefs. Who will be next? Pastors? Photographers? Caterers? Florists? This is a reckless, appalling, out-of-control decision that undermines the Constitution of the United States and our fundament right to religious liberty.”
Gays and lesbians comprise less than 5 percent of the nation’s population, according to surveys.
“Five unelected Supreme Court lawyers did not and cannot make law,” said Huckabee, who is trailing far behind in the nomination race. The judges “only can make rulings [and] the Supreme Court is not the Supreme branch and it’s certainly not the Supreme Being,” he said.
