Becky Gerritson, a Tea Party movement leader from Alabama who is running against her GOP congresswoman Rep. Martha Roby (R-AL) in a primary, is drawing a line in the sand when it comes to the Speakership vote: Absolutely, no way no how, should Roby vote for the pro-amnesty, pro-Obamatrade House Ways and Means Committee chairman Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) for Speaker of the House should he run.
Gerritson, who led the Wetumpka Tea Party—which was targeted by President Obama’s IRS—and has a national profile, made the declaration on Breitbart News Sunday on SiriusXM Patriot.
“I think that’s a great idea,” Gerritson said when asked why there can’t be a fair and open election with multiple candidates for Speaker, rather than having the donor class in Washington and on Wall Street forced Ryan down America’s throats. “I think the reason [they are pushing Ryan so hard] is because Washington is completely out of touch with the American people. When you have 13 percent of the people supporting the Speaker and yet you want to replace him with someone just like him, it means they don’t have a clue what the American people really want. It’s time for them to wake up.”
Gerritson promised that she would make this a campaign issue if Roby does end up voting for Ryan if Ryan runs—something that would scare Roby and any other establishment Republican facing a primary challenge from a conservative anywhere in the country away from voting for Ryan on the floor.
“Absolutely—yes,” Gerritson said when asked if Roby votes for Ryan if he runs, if she’d make it an issue in her campaign.
We need a conservative Speaker who stands up to the pressure from Washington and not be just like the establishment. I love Daniel Webster. Of course he’s not the most conservative of them all, but I like what he did in Florida—how he tried to level that pyramid of power and let other people bring their bills to the floor and I think we all know the establishment in the House and in the Senate have way too much power. They are what’s holding up us going forward and making changes in this country. So I think it’s a huge mistake if she votes for him.
Gerritson also, while on the program, laid out why she is running for Congress against Roby. Roby has supported several GOP leadership-driven initiatives, including the Paul Ryan-backed Obamatrade Trade Promotion Authority, funding for Obama’s executive amnesty and more.
I am running because the constituents in District 2 in Alabama are not being represented well,” Gerritson said. “Her voting score is 15 points lower than the Democrat that she replaced. District 2, as you said, is probably one of the most conservative district in the nation—yet she is voting for the CRomnibus bill, Obama’s illegal amnesty, all these different things, Amtrak reauthorization which is a totally failed program. There’s so many things—we could go down the line—and she is not representing the people.
Roby’s office has not responded to multiple requests for comment from Breitbart News in response to these developments.
