While demonstrating the folly of gun control proponent Mark Kelly’s argument that there are too many guns in too many places for confiscation to be a reality, Rush Limbaugh explained that President Obama has no intention of coming for even one of those guns. Instead, he would pass laws making certain guns illegal, trusting that law-abiding citizens would lay them at his feet.
During the January 7 gun control town hall Kelly mocked concerned Americans by pointing out how many hundreds of millions of gun are in tens of millions of different locations in America. CNN reported that Kelly stood from his place in the audience, saying,
So I would like you to explain, with 350 million guns in 65 million places, households, from Key West to Alaska — 350 million objects in 65 million places — if the federal government wanted to confiscate those objects, how would they do that? (Applause.)
Note the “applause” after Kelly said these things–and there was laughter too. The point was clear: How could these hayseed, anti-establishment, flyover country gun owners even think confiscation is possible?
But Limbaugh explained that it’s no laughing matter; that confiscation is not only possible but is actually the goal of the left. And it is something they believe they can do by passing laws to make guns–certain types of guns–illegal. Thereafter they trust that law-abiding citizens will just hand their guns over.
Limbaugh said: “That would be the first step. Make it illegal. They’d bank on the fact that 80% of the people the country would obey the law and just give up their guns once it becomes illegal. ‘I must obey the law. I’m a law-abiding citizen. Here’s my gun.'”
It is really an easy concept. Make guns illegal and publicize a harsh punishment for being caught with a gun–or at least a gun that has not been grandfathered in via registration–and law-abiding citizens will give them up. That is the approach Limbaugh believes the left would take in the USA.
