Former Marine Jonathan McConnell is primarying veteran establishment Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) in Alabama, because he says Alabama conservatives need a Senator who will stand up to the Senate’s GOP establishment.

And he’s confident that he will benefit from the anti-establishment wave that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Donald Trump, and Ben Carson have been riding in the 2016 presidential race.

On Tuesday’s Breitbart News Daily on Sirius XM Patriot channel 125, McConnell told host and Breitbart News Executive Chairman Stephen K. Bannon that nearly 80% of Republican voters will vote for Cruz, Trump, Carson in Alabama’s March 1 primary and he felt confident that they are “not going to cancel out their vote and vote for Richard Shelby, who is the quintessential politician.”

He said most people “in the know” realize that Shelby’s conservative record is a “farce.” McConnell said that though Shelby is conveniently running his re-election campaign as a populist who will stand up to President Barack Obama, Obama will leave office two weeks after the next Senator is sworn in while the GOP establishment will still be there.

“We need someone who is going to stand up to [Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell every day, not just someone who is just going to stand up to Barack Obama,” he said.

Jonathan McConnell is a 33-year-old former Marine infantry officer who did two deployments in Iraq. The Auburn graduate also started a maritime security company that defends merchant ships off the coast of Somalia while attending law school at the University of Alabama.

He said he would focus on spending and security issues in the Senate.

“We’ve got to cut our budget. We’ve got to get our spending under control,” Jonathan McConnell said. “We are killing small business right now with the amount of regulations and taxes.”

And as someone who has “seen the results of radical Islam on three different continents,” McConnell said “we have allowed people to come to this country unchecked.”

“Radical Islam is here in the United States. It’s here in Alabama,” he said, adding that “one of the most radical mosques in the country” is two miles from his parents’ house.

He also said that since “people like Richard Shelby have stolen our future from us,” millennials need to “take control of our future before it’s been spent away by career politicians.”
