Circle K Clerk Claims She was Suspended After Using Gun to Foil Armed Robbery

Circle K Clerk Claims She was Suspended After Using Gun to Foil Armed Robbery
Albuquerque,, NM

An Albuquerque, New Mexico, Circle K clerk claims she was suspended for two weeks after using a gun to defend herself during an attempted armed robbery.

The incident occurred Monday night.

The clerk — Jennifer Wertz — told KOAT 7 that she gets nervous walking out to her car alone at night, so she brought her gun to work when she realized she was scheduled for the late shift. She said that she “put her gun in her pocket after she heard that another nearby convenience store was just robbed,” and soon a man allegedly entered the store while holding a gun.

Wertz said, “He pointed the gun at my face, I grabbed my gun from my pocket, I cocked it and I shot.” Her shot struck 23-year-old Ferron Mendez “in the torso,” but he is expected to survive the wound.

Wertz told KOAT that employees are trained “not to chase or provoke.” Rather, they “are just supposed to stand there, and give [the suspects] what they want, and they leave.” When asked why she shot in self-defense instead of following the more stoic policies, Wertz said, “I’m sick and tired of being a sitting duck.”
