Home Invasion Suspect Flees After Armed Grandma Warns, ‘You’re Going to Die’

Putnam County, WV —

A home invasion suspect fled a Putnam County, West Virginia, home on Christmas Eve after an armed grandmother warned him, “You’re going to die.”

The grandmother, Yvonda Gatens, was alone in the home she and her late husband built approximately 40 years ago.

According to WSAZ, Gatens awoke to the sound of someone allegedly trying to get into a window. She called 911, grabbed a gun, and went to investigate.

Nearing the suspect, she yelled, “You’re going to die,” and the suspect dropped away from the window and ran away.

Putnam County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 911 call but were unable to find the suspect.

WCVB reports that Gatens spoke to her belief that the suspect underestimated her. She said, “Right at the foot of my bed? I mean, give me a break. If you come in here, it’s going to be you or me, and I’ll see to it that it won’t be me!”

She laughed and added, “Maybe they break in to get one of my cookie jars, reckon? See if I had cookies in all of them.”
