UC Berkeley’s administration and the Berkeley College Republicans group have condemned the riots that took place last night outside the cancelled event of Breitbart Senior editor MILO.
Jocelyn Gecker of the Associated Press tweeted today that a UC Berkeley spokesman had discussed the previous nights events saying, “This is not a proud night for this campus, the home of the Free Speech Movement.”

Pieter Sittler, Vice President of the Berkeley College Republicans group, condemned the actions of those that took part in the riots last night.
The Free Speech Movement is dead. Today, the Berkeley College Republicans’ constitutional right to free speech was silenced by criminals and thugs seeking to cancel Milo Yiannopoulos’ tour. Their success is a defeat for civilized society and the free exchange of ideas on college campuses across America. We would like to thank UCPD and the university administration for doing all they could to ensure the safety of everyone involved. It is tragic that the birthplace of the Free Speech Movement is also its final resting place.
UC Berkeley has a long history of supporting the first amendment and freedom of speech. Today the Heritage Foundation tweeted pictures of the free speech protests that took place at Berkeley in the 60’s when students demanded the right to speak freely, comparing it to last nights events where students and rioters did their best to silence voices they disagreed with. “1964: Berkeley students march to demand free speech. 2017: Berkeley students riot to demand free speech be denied.” the tweet reads.
