Middlebrooks Hits 3 Home Runs, Red Sox Win 13-0

The Boston Red Sox came back with a bang, beating the Toronto Blue Jays 13-0. They lost to the Blue Jays yesterday 5-0.

Third baseman Will Middlebrooks hit 3 home runs and had four RBIs. Two of the HRs were off NL Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey and the other off Dave Bush. It was his first three-homer game of his career. The last Sox player to do this was Dustin Pedroia on June 24, 2010.

The Sox hit six homers in this game and had 15 hits. Only a few players did not get a hit, including star Jackie Bradley, Jr. He walked once and struck out twice at four plate appearances. Centerfielder Jacoby Ellsbury started the game with a leadoff standup double, which is how he started yesterday’s game. He ended the game with one home run, a single, and a double.

John Lester pitched seven scoreless innings. He gave up five hits, but struck out six batters. He starts the season 2-0 for the first time in his career. Clayton Mortensen relieved Lester in the eighth inning. He gave up only two hits and struck out four batters.

The Red Sox open Fenway Park on Monday afternoon against the Baltimore Orioles. RHP Clay Buchholz will face LHP Wei-Yin Chen. They are each 4-2 to start the season, which is their best start since the 2006 season.
