Chris Johnson lost his roster spot on the Jets. Than he nearly lost his life in Orlando.

The NFL’s former top running back remains in stable condition after suffering a gunshot wound at a drive-by shooting early Sunday morning. Doctors expect Johnson to make a full recovery after enduring a bullet in the shoulder.

Dreekius Oricko Johnson, 28, the driver of the jeep carrying Johnson, lost his life in the attack. Another passenger, Reggie Johnson, 29, suffered gunshot wounds to the shoulder, hand, and leg.

The trio traveled from a rap concert by Kenny Turner, a high school classmate of the running back’s, that took place at Lux in Orlando on Saturday night. The decedent Dreekius Johnson, a musclebound weight-lifting enthusiast, possessed a criminal record that included convictions on drug, gun, and violent crimes.

“The victims advised that an unknown vehicle pulled up beside them at the red light and opened fire into the Jeep,” the Orange County Sheriff’s Office reported. “The two live victims were transported in stable condition.”

The attackers remain unknown and at large.

Before his release from the New York Jets last month, Johnson faced gun-related charges in his hometown of Orlando.

After accumulating 1,000 yards or more on the ground in his first six seasons, including a 2,006-yard sophomore effort, Johnson rushed for just 663 yards and one touchdown in his sole season in New York in 2014. The three-time Pro Bowler boasts 8,628 rushing yards and 51 touchdowns during his NFL career.
