Students at the University of Chicago condemned the campus police force for the manner in which they conducted an arrest of an armed robber.

According to a report from The College Fix, students at the University of Chicago are upset over the manner by which campus police officers arrested a suspect in an armed robbery near campus that occurred on February 11.

After the incident occured, the University of Chicago released an alert ordering students and staff to take cover as an armed robbery was taking place nearby.

Students immediately began criticizing the university and its police force for the timing of the alert, which was allegedly long after the threat was over. Others students condemned the campus police, arguing that black students on campus had a reason to be fearful that they might be wrongly arrested.

“There were militarized cops (literally carrying assault rifles) crawling all over campus looking for armed, african-american men. a black student could’ve worn a striped shirt (like one of the robbers)… reached for a phone at the wrong time… etc. and could have been shot,” one student wrote on social media. “Anywho … disarm/abolish the police.”

“UCPD is absolutely worthless thank you for coming to my ted talk,” another student posted.

“Dear god we’re gonna have to listen to c*llege r*publicans talk about how this proves we need more cops,” a third student chimed in.

Other students at the University of Chicago claimed that some students insisted that classes continue despite the alert to take shelter.

At the end of the day, the university released a statement praising the work of the campus police force. “We are grateful for rapid response by police to this situation, and for the campus community’s help and cooperation, including several key tips submitted to UCPD via the UChicago Safe app. Such events can move quickly, making it even more important for members of our community to maintain updated emergency contact information,” the statement read.
